About PlatePal

Friendly neighborhood messaging — leave a note, not a ticket.

The short version

PlatePal lets you message any car's owner using just their license plate. Lights left on? Blocking a driveway? Want to say thanks? Send a polite note — no tickets, no shaming, no drama.

We are not the police, the DMV, or a parking enforcement service. We're a way for neighbors to talk to each other.

What you can do

What PlatePal is not

We want to be very clear about a few things:

Frequently asked questions

Is it free?

Yes. Completely free. Free to sign up, free to send messages, free to receive notes. No paywall, no premium tier, no credit card.

Can I look up who owns a plate?

No. PlatePal does not give you the owner's name, address, phone number, or any DMV data. Federal law (the Driver's Privacy Protection Act, DPPA) protects that information. Messaging works only because the owner has chosen to register their plate on PlatePal — they receive your note in their inbox without revealing who they are to you.

What if the person I want to message isn't on PlatePal?

Then they won't see your message. The app will tell you the plate isn't registered. PlatePal grows as more neighbors join.

Can I send messages anonymously?

Yes. Toggle "Send anonymously" before sending. Your name is replaced with "Anonymous" for that message. Admins still see who sent it for moderation purposes, but the recipient does not.

How is my data protected?

Your address is never shown publicly — it's only used to deliver street alerts to the right people. Your password is stored as a salted hash; we never see it. You can request a full export or deletion from Settings. See our Privacy Policy for the full details.

Can people harass me through this?

If someone sends you something inappropriate, hit "Report spam" or "Block sender" on the message. Admins review reports. Repeat offenders lose their accounts. We do not tolerate threats, harassment, or hate speech.

Why a license plate? Why not just text my neighbor?

Because most of the time you don't know your neighbor. You just see a car. PlatePal solves the "I have something polite to tell whoever owns that car but no way to reach them" problem.

What if I lose access to my email?

Reach out via our contact page or the in-app Feedback tab and an admin will help you recover your account.

Who built this?

A solo founder who wanted a less hostile way for neighbors to talk about cars. Have a feature idea or complaint? The Feedback tab inside the app goes straight to the team — your message gets read.
